 Shopping Days in Marmaris
Autumn Season 20
11

Every day is a shopping day in Marmaris. Yet most of you who love bargains will find it easier to bag that most wanted item and pay half price... from the end of September to end of October every year. This is considered to be the last month of the local season in Marmaris. Most shop keepers begin to count their inventory and money made in the season. They do not have much time to go and need to sell off to turn their products into cash, much needed for rent, salaries, and of course taxes. So here you are - their much needed customer in their shop! Be there at the right place and right time! March also works for many as early Easter shopping.

A word of advice: don’t leave your shopping for the last day. You all know why :)

Turkish Carpets

Turks were amongst the earliest carpet weavers in history. Carpet weaving is still widespread throughout Anatolia. It is one of the traditional crafts that survive with original vitality and folklore. Carpets are woven knot by knot on handlooms. Each hand made carpet is unique. There may be similar designs but one is never exactly the same as the other. Fine carpets are made of pure sheep wool, pure silk, or cotton. These carpets are dyed with natural dyes; therefore, good quality hand woven carpets are very enduring and their colours are everlasting. Turkish carpets are woven individually at village homes and in special workshops. Every carpet has a story and everyone is a unique piece of artistic talent that has taken hours of painstaking labour.

Besides carpets there are boldly patterned "kilims" (woven rugs) and "cicims" (embroidered rugs). Also there are very attractive rugs of Angora goat wool.

Marmaris Info Buyer Guide

Marmaris ... A Shopper’s Paradise!

Marmaris is well known as an existing shopping destination.

Many products such as cloth, woolen fabrics, designer- wear, shoes, jewellery, leather, carpets and of course spirits and tobaco products are cheaper than in most European countries.

Jewellery, especially gold and diamonds are among the best buys Marmaris has to offer.

Larger jewellery shops are with their own workshops and offer a remarkable choice of models and design. You will find everything from original design to most fashionable designs. Jewellery is generally hand made in silver or 18 carat gold. Also the dealers are generally very knowlegeable about import regulations and duties on precious jewellery and gold in other countries.

Due to Turkey's VAT Free shopping you can collect a tax refund on departure to your country of origin.
Turkish folk art is alive and well with numerous small industries producing traditional pottery, leather goods, wood and metalwork embroidery, weaving and knitting.

Turkish wines can be bought from many shops throughout the resort as well as famous and unique local honey, another speciality of Marmaris production.

Beautiful hand-woven carpets can be bought from some carpet factories and in various shops in Marmaris and in the village of Turgut.
Local lace and embroideries are also available in various shops all around Marmaris.

In general shopping hours are from 9am to 10pm. During summer many shops are keeping open after 10pm (especially in the Old town).

Buying Jewellery in Marmaris - As with any 'big' purchase you make in life, do some research & shop around first - one customer shares an unlucky experience here. Marmarisinfo do not know the business involved in this specific case, but remember - for every bad experience many other people also have some very good ones. Marmarisinfo only endorse the businesses we mention on our website.

I would like to share my experience of buying jewellery in Marmaris as a warning to your readers.

Marmaris Markets

Carsi Market in Marmaris

Nestled in the heart of the resort, in the shadow of the Ottoman Castle, the Old Carsi Market offers the perfect antidote to out-of-town shopping malls. The stalls in the old covered market are the place to look for something original, of excellent quality and value for money. Sundays are busiest, with over 200 shops operating, including 1 TL shops, brand name shops, souvenir and jewelers shops and markets. On weekdays between 11:00 and 16:00 the markets' varied shops are quieter, except at lunchtime, when the choice of eating places attracts the young crowd.

Sunday Market in Beldibi

Nestled between the mountainous crevices of Beldibi area villagers living in Beldibi or nearby lead a simple life dependent on agriculture and livestock. The market in Beldibi is famous for its rich produce, including potatoes, onions, fresh herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, chilli peppers, seeds, plants. Some household items are available at prices cheaper than shopping centers. Some clothes from T-shirts to accessories are sold too, but offer less clothing options than the Market in Marmaris on Thursdays. This is a perfect place to spend your Sunday afternoon in a local bazar setting.

Wednesday Market in Icmeler

Set by the road to Turunc, just before you begin climbing up the mountains, this market is perhaps the smallest of the three markets, described here. Yet no matter of its size it does set the mood for shopping, looking for souvenirs, simple buys and bargains available only in Turkey. Take your camera to picture the colourful abundance of fresh vegetables and fruit, clothes and household items.

Thursday Market in Marmaris (the popular Village Market)

Marmaris Village Market sells fruit, vegetables, fabrics and some clothes - for men, women and children, from street-cred clubwear to fake designer goods and last year's must-haves. Some of its specialities are sports wear, linen, tablecloths and there's household goods, too.  The market is held in and around G. Mustafa Muglali Caddesi and is open Thursdays 08:00-18:00 and the best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon. There is a stall for the local animal shelter on the open air market at Siteler, opposite Grand Azur hotel on the main road between Marmaris and Icmeler. Easy to find as we the stall is situated at the entrance to the market. The stall is provided by the municipality. All money raised are for food and medicine. Read more here
